The Field Marshall tractor

Field Marshall tractors are among the most iconic machines ever to grace British farmland, representing a golden age of agricultural engineering. Introduced in the 1940s, the Field Marshall was designed to cope with the demanding conditions of post-war agriculture, and it quickly earned a reputation as a reliable workhorse that could handle heavy soils and long hours with ease.

Perhaps the most memorable feature of a Field Marshall tractor is its single-cylinder diesel engine, which can be started using a handle, or something more dramatic, the skilful use of a blank shotgun cartridge. This distinctive starting method, combined with the slow, powerful “chug” of the engine once running, makes the Field Marshall instantly recognisable and endlessly fascinating to enthusiasts and the public alike.

Today, lovingly restored and carefully maintained, Field Marshall tractors are prized not only for their historical importance but also for the dedication and craftsmanship of their owners. They stand as proud reminders of Britain’s agricultural heritage and continue to draw crowds wherever they appear.
